To multiply fractions you need to do the number times the numerator.

In this question it will be 5 x 1 = 5. Then denominator will stay the same so the answer is 5/4

5 times 1/4 can be answered in 2 ways. If we are considering 1/4 as a fraction only then we multiply by 5 and then divide by 4 to get 5/4. If we consider 1/4 as 0.25 then we have 5 times 0.25 which gives us 1.25 which is equivalent to 5/4.

When we see a question which involves multiplying fractions, it is useful to think about it in terms of division.

1/4 is a fraction. Fractions have a denominator (in this case 4) and a numerator (in this case 1).

Let's pretend the question was: 4/4 x 5. Because 4/4 is equal to 1, we would simply multiply 5 by 1 to get 5.

Therefore, we know that our question MUST give us an answer which is less than 5. Essentially, we need to find out what '1 out of 4 parts' of 5 is. To do this, we must first divide our number 5 by 4 (the denominator), this gives us 1.25. We have now found out that 1 part = 1.25, which answers our question.

However, if the question asked us for a different number of parts, for example, if the question was ''5 times 2/4'', we would simply complete the steps above and find out the value of 1 part, then multiply that amount, in this case, we would multiply it by 2 (numerator)

In summary, to multiply fractions we:

  1. Divide our whole number by the denominator
  2. Multiply our whole number by the numerator

Answer to the Question:

5 x 1/4= 1.25

Another example:

5 x 2/4= 2.5

5 x 1/4 = 1.25. It is done like this. We change 1/4 to 0.25 and then work 5 x 0.25 = 1.25 or 5 x 1/4 = (5 x 1)/4 = 5/4 = 1.25

When multiplying a fraction by an integer, we can re-write the integer as a fraction over 1. So, 5 multiplied by 1/4 becomes: 5/1 x 1/4. Now we multiply the numerator of both fractions together and the denominators of both fractions together. This becomes: (5 x 1) / (1 x 4) = 5/4

1.25 or 5/4

1.Work out 5 x 1 which gets you 5.

2.Then divide this by 4 as the 1 in the question is 1/4.
