Waste Management Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

Which two changes in humans mean that more resources are used and more waste is produced?

Rapid growth in the human population and an increase in the standard of living.

Name three harmful substances that can cause water pollution.

Sewage, fertiliser and toxic chemicals (e.g. pesticides).

Name two harmful substances that can cause air pollution.

Smoke (particulates) and acidic gases such as sulfur dioxide.

What two things cause pollution on land?

Landfill and toxic chemicals.

True or false? Pollution reduces biodiversity only when it happens in water.

False. Pollution in water, in air or on land kills plants and animals, so biodiversity is reduced.

What are the steps to calculate the mean annual increase in the human population?

e.g. 1.6 billion in 1900 and 2.5 billion in 1950

  1. Find the increase: 2.5−1.6=0.92.5 - 1.6 = 0.9 billion
  2. Divide by the number of years: 0.9÷500.9 \div 50
  3. =0.018= 0.018 billion per year
