Combustion of Fuels Flashcards

All 4 cards in this deck

What are the products of the complete combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel?

Carbon dioxide and water, and energy is given out (the reaction is exothermic).

Why can incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon produce carbon monoxide and carbon (soot)?

There is insufficient oxygen to oxidise all the carbon to carbon dioxide.
e.g. 2CH4+3O2→2CO+4H2O2CH_4 + 3O_2 \rightarrow 2CO + 4H_2O

How does carbon monoxide behave as a toxic gas?

It reacts with haemoglobin in the blood, stopping oxygen being carried, so less oxygen reaches the brain. It is colourless and odourless, so hard to detect.

Give two problems caused by soot produced by incomplete combustion in fuel-burning appliances.

It can aggravate asthma/respiratory problems, and it makes buildings dirty.
