Group 0 Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

Why are the noble gases in Group 0 chemically inert?

Their atoms have full outer shells, so they do not gain, lose, transfer or share electrons.

Apart from being inert, which property of helium makes it suitable for filling balloons?

Its low density (it is less dense than air).

Which property of argon makes it suitable as an atmosphere for joining steel with a very hot flame?

Argon is unreactive (inert), so it does not react with the hot metal.

What happens to boiling point and density of the noble gases going down Group 0?

Both increase down the group.

Why is helium safer than hydrogen for filling lighter-than-air craft such as blimps?

Helium is non-flammable, so it cannot catch fire, whereas hydrogen burns explosively in air.

Why is a filament light bulb filled with argon rather than air?

Argon is inert, so the white-hot filament cannot react with it and burn out, as it would with the oxygen in air.
