The Heart Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What is the function of the coronary arteries?

They supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood.

What is a double circulatory system?

Blood passes through the heart twice for each circuit of the body: one loop to the lungs and one to the rest of the body.
Advantage: blood is pumped again at high pressure, so it flows faster to the body.

What controls the natural resting heart rate?

A group of cells in the right atrium that act as a pacemaker.

True or false? An artificial pacemaker is an electrical device used to correct irregularities in the heart rate.

True. It is implanted to keep the heart beating regularly.

True or false? As the percentage of a coronary artery that is blocked increases, the blood flow through it increases.

False. Blood flow decreases as the percentage blockage increases (a negative correlation).
