Efficiency in Production Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is efficiency in production?

How well a business uses its resources to make products or provide services — the amount of inputs needed relative to outputs.

What is lean production?

A production approach that aims to reduce waste during the production process.
e.g. cutting faulty products, unsold stock and employee downtime.

What is kaizen?

Continuous improvement — all employees are regularly encouraged to suggest ways the production process can be improved.

What is just-in-time (JIT) production?

Receiving regular deliveries of only the stock needed before existing raw materials run out, so no buffer stock is held.

Give two ways just-in-time (JIT) makes production more efficient.

It frees up storage space for production and reduces the capital tied up in stock; frequent deliveries also keep perishable items fresher.

True or false? A business using just-in-time (JIT) can take advantage of bulk-buy discounts.

False. JIT means ordering small quantities frequently, so the business loses the discounts given for large orders.
