Animal Stem Cells Flashcards
All 4 cards in this deck
What is a stem cell?
An undifferentiated (unspecialised) cell that can divide and differentiate into other types of cell.
How do embryonic stem cells produce the cells of an embryo?
They divide by mitosis, then differentiate into specialised cells.
Where are adult stem cells found in humans, and what do they do?
In tissues such as bone marrow; they divide to replace damaged or worn-out cells.
True or false? Adult stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell.
False. Adult stem cells form only a limited range of cell types (e.g. bone marrow stem cells form blood cells); embryonic stem cells can form any cell type.
