State Symbols Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What are the state symbols used in chemical equations for solid, liquid and gas?

(s)(s) for solid, (l)(l) for liquid, (g)(g) for gas.

What does the state symbol (aq)(aq) mean in a chemical equation?

Aqueous — the substance is dissolved in water.

True or false? Liquid water produced in a reaction is written as H2O(aq)\mathrm{H_2O(aq)}.

False. It is written H2O(l)\mathrm{H_2O(l)}; (aq)(aq) is only for substances dissolved in water.

What state symbol is given to an insoluble precipitate formed in a solution?

(s)(s), because it is a solid.

e.g. BaSO4(s)\mathrm{BaSO_4(s)}

What are the steps to add state symbols to an equation?

e.g. HCl+NaOH→NaCl+H2O\mathrm{HCl} + \mathrm{NaOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{NaCl} + \mathrm{H_2O}

  1. Substances dissolved in water get (aq)(aq): HCl(aq)\mathrm{HCl(aq)}, NaOH(aq)\mathrm{NaOH(aq)}, NaCl(aq)\mathrm{NaCl(aq)}.

  2. Pure liquids get (l)(l): H2O(l)\mathrm{H_2O(l)}.

  3. Insoluble solids get (s)(s) and gases get (g)(g): none here.
