Required Practical: Preparation of a Soluble Salt Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What are the steps of the required practical to prepare a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt?

e.g. copper sulfate from copper oxide and dilute sulfuric acid

  1. Warm the dilute sulfuric acid with a Bunsen burner and add copper oxide until it is in excess.
  2. Filter off the excess copper oxide.
  3. Evaporate the filtrate with a water bath/electric heater, then leave it to crystallise and dry the crystals.

In the salt preparation required practical, what is used to heat the dilute acid before the solid is added?

A Bunsen burner — warming the acid makes the solid react faster.

In the salt preparation required practical, what equipment is used to evaporate the filtrate gently?

A water bath or an electric heater.

How are the salt crystals dried at the end of the salt preparation practical?

Pat them dry between sheets of filter paper, or leave them in a warm place/warm oven.

True or false? In the salt preparation practical, excess acid is used rather than excess solid.

False. Excess solid is used because it can be filtered off, leaving a pure salt solution.
