Alcohols Flashcards

All 7 cards in this deck

What is the functional group of the alcohols?

−OH-OH

Name the first four members of the homologous series of alcohols.

Methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol

What happens when one of the first four alcohols reacts with sodium?

The sodium reacts and hydrogen gas is given off (fizzing).

What is produced when an alcohol reacts with an oxidising agent?

A carboxylic acid.

e.g. ethanol is oxidised to ethanoic acid.

What are the main uses of methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol?

As fuels and as solvents; ethanol is also the alcohol in alcoholic drinks.

What conditions are used to produce ethanol by the fermentation of sugar solution with yeast?

Yeast added to sugar solution, kept warm (about 25–45 °C) and anaerobic (no oxygen/air).

True or false? When one of the first four alcohols burns completely in air, the products are carbon dioxide and water.

True. Alcohols are flammable and burn in air, releasing energy, e.g. C2H5OH+3O2→2CO2+3H2OC_2H_5OH + 3O_2 \rightarrow 2CO_2 + 3H_2O.
