Halides Flashcards
All 5 cards in this deck
What are the steps to test a solution for halide ions?
e.g. testing sodium chloride solution- Add dilute nitric acid.
- Add silver nitrate solution.
- A precipitate forms — white here, so chloride ions are present.
What colour precipitate does silver nitrate solution give with chloride ions?
White (silver chloride).
What colour precipitate does silver nitrate solution give with bromide ions?
Cream (silver bromide).
What colour precipitate does silver nitrate solution give with iodide ions?
Yellow (silver iodide).
True or false? Dilute hydrochloric acid should be used to acidify a solution before adding silver nitrate in the test for halide ions.
False. It contains chloride ions and would give a white precipitate; dilute nitric acid is used.
