Analysing Data Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is an anomaly in fieldwork data?

A result that is unusual or unexpected and does not fit the pattern of the rest of the data.

True or false? To describe a pattern in your results, you should repeat the figures shown in the table.

False. Describing a pattern means picking out the overall trend (e.g. highs, lows, direction or distance decay), then supporting it with figures.

Give one reason the mean is a useful statistic for analysing fieldwork data.

It considers all the values collected, so it summarises the whole data set.

What is a positive relationship between two sets of fieldwork data?

e.g. distance travelled and length of stay of visitors

As one variable increases, the other also increases.
Here, visitors who travelled further tended to stay longer.

True or false? If the points on a scatter graph are widely spread out, the relationship between the two data sets is strong.

False. A wide spread of points means the relationship is not strong, even if there is a general trend.

True or false? A strong correlation between two sets of fieldwork data proves that one causes the other.

False. A correlation only shows that the two are linked; the pattern could be coincidence or caused by another factor.
