Urbanisation Flashcards

All 11 cards in this deck

What is urbanisation?

The increase in the proportion of a country's population living in urban areas (towns and cities).

In which year were the global urban and rural populations the same?

Give one reason why cities in HICs are now growing more slowly than cities in LICs/NEEs.

They urbanised in the past, during the industrial revolution, so most of the population already lives in urban areas.

What is meant by rural-urban migration?

The movement of people from the countryside to the city.

Give two pull factors that encourage people to move to urban areas in LICs/NEEs.

Better paid jobs and better healthcare (also: improved education, reliable electricity, higher standard of living).

Give two push factors that encourage people to leave rural areas in LICs/NEEs.

Low wages and food shortages (also: limited job opportunities, poor access to education/healthcare, conflict, natural disasters).

What is natural increase?

When the birth rate is higher than the death rate, so the population grows.

What is a megacity?

A city with at least 10 million people.

Give one reason for the growth of megacities in LICs/NEEs.

High rates of rural-urban migration (also: high natural increase in cities, or development concentrated in one or two large cities).

In which two continents is the urban population growing fastest?

Africa (fastest of all) and Asia, where most countries are LICs or NEEs.

In which continent are most of the world's megacities found?

Asia, which has more than half of them. Most new megacities are expected to emerge in Asia and Africa.
