Sustainable Food Supplies Flashcards
All 6 cards in this deck
What is organic farming?
Growing food without artificial fertilisers or pesticides, using natural methods such as manure and crop rotation.
What is permaculture?
Farming that imitates natural ecosystems, using natural cycles and diversity so the system sustains itself with few external inputs.
Give one benefit of urban farming initiatives.
Food is produced locally on rooftops, allotments or unused plots, so it has a lower carbon footprint and is fresher.
Why does seasonal food consumption make food supply more sustainable?
It reduces the need for imported food, which is assumed to have a higher carbon footprint.
Why does reducing food waste and losses make food supply more sustainable?
Existing supplies last longer and less waste goes to landfill, where it produces methane.
Give one way fish or meat can come from more sustainable sources.
Any one: fishing quotas cap catches so fish stocks can recover; fishing methods that do less damage to the seabed and other species; eco-labels so shoppers can choose sustainably caught fish; rearing cattle on natural grassland instead of cleared forest and grain feed.
