Tropical Storm Formation & Structure Flashcards
All 6 cards in this deck
What sea temperature is needed for a tropical storm to form?
Over 27 °C, down to a depth of at least about 50 m.
Give one reason why tropical storms have a seasonal pattern.
They occur in late summer and autumn when sea temperatures are highest (over 26–27 °C).
What is the eye of a tropical storm?
The calm, cloud-free centre of low pressure, with light winds and no rain.
What is the eye wall of a tropical storm?
The band of towering dense cloud around the eye, where the strongest winds and heaviest rain occur.
True or false? A tropical storm loses strength once it moves over land.
True. It is cut off from the warm ocean water that supplies its energy, so it weakens.
Why do tropical storms not form within about 5 degrees of the Equator?
The Coriolis effect, caused by the Earth's rotation, is too weak there to make the storm spin.
