Sustainable Rainforest Management Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What is selective logging?

Only some trees – usually older or more valuable ones – are felled, leaving the rest standing so the forest recovers quickly.

How does replanting help to manage the rainforest sustainably?

New trees are planted to replace those felled, so the forest resource is maintained for the future.

What is ecotourism?

Small-scale tourism that minimises damage to the environment and benefits local people.

How do conservation and education help manage the rainforest sustainably?

Protected areas such as national parks conserve the forest, while educating local people and tourists spreads understanding of sustainable use.

How can debt reduction help make tropical rainforests more sustainable?

Countries are relieved of some of their debt in return for protecting their rainforests – a debt-for-nature swap.

What do international agreements about tropical hardwoods aim to do?

Restrict trade to timber from sustainably managed forests, e.g. FSC-certified timber that consumers can choose to buy.
