Effects of & Responses to Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
All 6 cards in this deck
What is a primary effect of a tectonic hazard?
An effect caused directly and immediately by the hazard itself, e.g. buildings collapsing in an earthquake.
What is a secondary effect of a tectonic hazard?
An effect that happens later, as a result of the primary effects, e.g. disease spreading from contaminated water.
Give two primary effects of an earthquake.
Buildings collapse; people are injured, killed or trapped under rubble. (Also: loss of power/water supply, communications damaged.)
What is the difference between an immediate and a long-term response to a tectonic hazard?
Immediate responses happen during or straight after the event (e.g. search and rescue, declaring a state of emergency); long-term responses come weeks to years later (e.g. rebuilding homes, improving building design).
Give two primary effects of a volcanic eruption.
Any two of: lava and pyroclastic flows destroy buildings, roads and farmland; people are killed or injured; falling ash buries crops and can make roofs collapse; volcanic gases make breathing difficult.
Give two secondary effects of an earthquake.
Any two of: fires started by broken gas pipes and power lines; landslides; a tsunami if the earthquake is under the sea; disease spread by contaminated water supplies.
