Hazard Risk Flashcards
All 6 cards in this deck
What is hazard risk?
The probability (chance) that a natural hazard will occur and harm people or damage their property.
How does population density affect hazard risk?
Higher population density increases risk, because more people and property are exposed in the hazard area.
How does wealth affect hazard risk?
Poorer places have higher risk, as they cannot afford hazard-proof buildings, defences or emergency services.
True or false? Better preparation and monitoring reduce hazard risk without changing how often the hazard occurs.
True. Preparedness lowers the chance of people being harmed, but not the frequency of the natural event.
True or false? A strong earthquake in an uninhabited desert is a high-risk natural hazard.
False. With no people or property threatened, the hazard risk is very low.
True or false? A natural hazard with a low death toll must have had a small economic impact.
False. Wealthier countries often record huge economic losses but few deaths, because buildings and preparation protect people.
