Graphical Skills Flashcards
All 15 cards in this deck
What is a divided bar chart?
A single bar split into sections, each section showing one category's share of the whole (sections total 100%).
What are the steps to complete a pie chart from percentage data?
e.g. add a sector for 25%- Change the percentage to degrees (multiply by 3.6): 25 × 3.6 = 90°
- Measure that angle from the existing line with a protractor and draw the sector.
- Shade or label the sector to match the key.
Which type of graph should be used to show the relationship between two sets of data?
e.g. GNI per person and food consumption per personA scattergraph, with a line of best fit drawn through the centre of the points.
What is a choropleth map?
A map where areas are shaded in different colours or densities according to the value of the data for each area.
What is an isoline?
A line on a map joining all the points that have the same value, e.g. all places with a temperature of 16°C.
On an isoline map, what does it mean when the isolines are close together?
The value changes rapidly over a short distance, i.e. a steep gradient.
What is a dot map?
A map on which each dot represents a fixed number of something, placed to show distribution and density.
What is a desire line map?
A map with straight lines drawn from each origin to the destination, showing movement without following the actual route.
What is a proportional symbol map?
A map using symbols whose size is drawn in proportion to the value they represent at that location.
What is a flow line map?
A map with arrows drawn along routes, the width of each arrow proportional to the amount moving; the arrowhead shows the direction.
What does a population pyramid show?
The age and sex structure of a population: the percentage or number of males and females in each age group.
What does a dispersion graph show?
Every individual value for each site or category plotted against a vertical scale, showing the spread of the data.
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative data?
Qualitative data describes opinions or qualities in words or images; quantitative data is numerical.
What is a GIS (geographical information system)?
Software that stores, displays and analyses geo-spatial data as layers on a map.
How is a histogram different from a bar chart?
A histogram shows continuous data grouped into equal class intervals along a continuous scale, so its bars touch with no gaps between them.
