Adaptation Flashcards

All 5 cards in this deck

What is adaptation to climate change?

Action taken to help communities and ecosystems cope with a changing climate, reducing vulnerability to its harmful effects.

True or false? Building sea walls to protect land from rising sea levels is an example of mitigation.

False. It is adaptation; mitigation means reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit warming itself.

Give two ways farmers can adapt agricultural systems to climate change.

Grow drought-resistant or new crops (e.g. oranges and grapes); shift cultivation to new areas and increase irrigation as rainfall patterns change.

Give two ways of managing water supply as an adaptation to climate change.

Water transfer schemes moving water from areas of surplus to areas of shortage; desalination plants to produce fresh water from sea water.

Give two ways of reducing the risk from rising sea levels.

Build sea defences to protect land from being eroded; build houses on stilts in vulnerable areas.
