What is the purpose of the human resources function in a business?

To identify and meet the human resource (staffing) needs of the business, so it has the right number of staff with the right skills.

Give three tasks that are part of a human resources job role.

Any three of: recruiting and selecting staff; identifying and organising training; managing pay; motivating and retaining staff.

Give two things a business must decide when identifying its human resource needs.

Any two of: how many workers it needs; how many should be full-time or part-time; what skills they need; when and where they will work; how many it can afford; how they will be supervised.

Give two reasons why a business's human resource needs may change.

Any two of: workers retire, leave or are promoted; the business grows or shrinks; it changes how it produces, e.g. new technology; it relocates; its budget for staff changes; employment law changes.
