Explain Questions Flashcards

All 6 cards in this deck

What does an 'explain' question require beyond the point itself?

Development of that point — a reason and its effect on the business.

Which connectives show development in an explain answer?

'because', 'so', 'this means that', 'which leads to'.

What are the steps to answer an explain question?

e.g. 'Explain one benefit to a retailer of offering staff training' (3 marks)

  1. State the point: staff serve customers better.
  2. Add the reason with 'because': because they know the products.
  3. Give the effect on the business with 'so': so sales and customer loyalty rise.

How many points should you make for 'Explain one benefit...'?

One — developed fully. Extra points earn no marks.

True or false? An explain question needs both sides of the argument and a judgement.

False. Only a developed one-sided point is needed; balance and judgement belong to evaluate.

True or false? When an explain question names a business, your answer must be linked to that business.

True. Generic answers that could apply to any firm limit the marks.
